Every hobby has its nerds...

For a change, I know I'm right.  For sure.  Nerds aren't confined to a particular genre of hobby.  I am cheerful about my standing as a paper craft nerd.  I don't understand but acknowledge Mr Dunnit's entrancement with golf.  And archery.  And, as she's grown up, so I delight in Miss Dunnit's almost lifelong hobby too.  Although to be completely frank, there have been moments of sewing machine hell that have not been delightful!  But there we are, I blog for validation, sharing, involvement and my daughter does the CosPlay.  That's Costume Role Play to you.  Have you ever seen The Big Bang Theory with the four nerd chums who spend time in Comic shops and have dressing up in their wardrobes?  Well that's Miss Dunnit.  Except she's not a Professor.  Or American. So this weekend, at London's ComicCon (Convention...see how they like to link words?), Miss Dunnit is playing the role of Jon Snow and her friend is going as Bran Stark from the tv series Game of Thrones.  So that's why the costmes have involved mock swede and pvc styled into leather...a vaguely medieval look for a programme that seems to me to radiate nothing but grunge and cold. (Oh, and if you have young people about....there's also a lot of nakedness and erm...you know what, quite gratuitously if you ask me.  But I'm 48 and tired, so what do I know.)

So this cloak was a yellow velvet curtain and the leather chest strap was a belt.( A benefit of volunteering for a charity shop is the first rummage in the donations!).  The fur shoulder throw was a gilet from Primark...actually on, the cloak looks very good and the fur looks very much like it was thrown over for added warmth.
And here's what you saw in pieces on Wednesday.  A doublet.  There's also trousers and padded thigh guards and Mr Dunnit has made a fabulous sword...a picture of the 'works' has to wait until it's all been revealed to the ComicCon world!  So a round of applause to Miss Dunnit for inventiveness and staying power.  She didn't just make her own outfit.  No sir, she made the one her chum will be wearing too.  Apparently, her chum is too busy at University.  I know there's sarcasm there, and that makes my daughter a better person than me, for sure.  Which is what the world needs, so that's OK.
So, while Miss Dunnit sweats her way round London's Excel, I'm planning a day of normalness for today and a day at my desk for tomorrow.  I'm quite excited as it will be the first time for a week.  Crop weekend is creeping up...I need to get back into nerd mode and start preparing!
Have a lovely weekend.  And if you live in the northern hemisphere - stay warm and put your clocks back tonight!

I prefer the word geek, but other than that I'm with you all the way. I'm a total craft geek. Look how far I was prepared to travel just for a crafternoon? Passion is a wonderful thing, and I'm glad Miss Dunnit's costume turned out so well. Looking forward to seeing it on her, especially as I'm also a scifi geek!

Congrats to you both.

I definitely see a talent there! Quite a good seamstress! My machine sits alone and forgotten holding a lamp and a potted plant.

Yep I'm a nerd/geek too, of craft, books and football! That's me. But I guess you knew that and I suppose I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to tidiness and packing too. Super pics of such wonderful outfits, go team Dunnit is what I say. Hope a good time is had by all. Enjoy your weekend lovely. I shall be resting, listening to footy and urm resting! Bliddy virus, but I think I've seen the worse of it now so I can focus on recovering. I've my one and only craft fair next weekend so I've much to do! Typical. Take care Zo xx

Way to go Miss Dunnit. It is SO good to see the younger generation expressing themselves in creative and imaginative ways. No hoodies, no 'chav' attitudes, no ASBO's. Just fantastic young people sharing their passion for fantasy/anime/adventure. Huge rounds of applause here, and a sneaking feeling my three will be looking to go next year!! Have a great time doing what you love, both of you, hugs, Buttons x

Glad the outfits got finished - the doublet is very impressive, but I love the cloak and am thinking it would be very useful in today's very cold snap!! Make sure we get to see photos of the costume on Miss D and hope she and her friends have a great time. Me, I am staying inside in the warm!

Fab costumes! I couldn't see where the swede came in, but hey, what do I know? ;)

Have been absent from blogland, as I'm sure you have noticed (has it made you weep? Has it?) because I am up to my SCALP in the most humungous amount of work you have EVER seen in your LIFE, on my teacher training course. But I may surface now and again. Hugs n stuff xxxxxx :D

This is really strange. It's6.43am on Sunday morning and your email has only just come through - actually the email is timed at 6.02am.

I read about Comicon which reminded me that I worked with a woman whose daughter did the role play thing, but it was a bit more on the dungeons and dragons thing - and you could be killed during the game - so all that time making fabulous costumes (which my colleague got involved in making too) were a lot of bother for not a lot of time if you were one of the unfortunate ones... They were Uni types too. You're daughter is a better person than me too! I shall keep that opinion to myself though. I suppose my colleague was a nerd because she never shut up about making the bloody costumes - to the point of I had to shut my office door to get some work done (not really - I did ask the odd question about it)!!

The costumes are fabulous though. The most elaborate thing I've done is dye a pair of chinos bright yellow and make a top out of bright yellow material in order to make my husband an Ali G costume - oh, I made the hat too... must blog a pic of that. I was super thin and Marilyn Monroe for my 30th birthday. 11 nearly 12 years ago.

As I got to the end of your post - I realise I don't know whether my PC is an hour in front, or whether it has already done the update on the time. I'll ring speaking clock because none of them in the house are to be believed....

great post
hugs

Your creation is amazing. I'm looking forward to the grand modeling. Take lots of photos. I'm always amazed by those who can sew, not a gene I have.

Fabby costumes! I did think that Management's interest in Game of Thrones was all about the noodiness but he loved and devoured all the books too so he is forgiven. Still chuckling over swede :-)

wow. the costumes are terrific. I just finished the last book of the series and hope the author doesn't take another 5 yrs to write the next one...a Jon Snow costume. Brilliant! wonder how many folks will actually figure out their characters? and I am thinking that there are a lot of geeks out there who are pretty much running the world. love your post!

Having had to go to the bloomin thing myself at the weekend, I can only say ... what a truly lovely bunch of nurds, geeks, etc., they all are.

Everyone was having such a good time, even me just watching them all whilst I waited for my own little wierdo! I looked out for Miss D but didn't see her.

Hugs

Wow - looking forward to seeing the pictures of the costumes being modelled!! Prefer geek to nerd though!
Sad to admit but I went from thinking The Big Bang Theory was rubbish, to loving it! Lewis has just lent me his boxed set to watch while I'm crafting (Ian's not a fan so it's watch in the den only!)

Cosplay is popular here too! They usually hold it in malls and because the sotumes are so elaborate, people (like me) take pictures with the costume clad kids. Hope Ms Dunnit and her friend have lots of fun! Patsy from

Miss Dunnit did a fantastic job with the costume. That cloak looks straight off the set of G of T :o)
I'm 44, so am I not allowed to love this show?! Can't wait for the next series to be available on DVD as we don't have any of the paid for satellite channels. Hope Miss D had a brilliant time x
